This is a question that gets asked often… How can I tell if my Thai girlfriend loves me? While there is obviously is no definitive answer to this question, we have put together some signs that might indicate that your Thai girlfriend harbours strong feelings for you.

1. She wants you to meet her parents

Many foreigners gain an incorrect perception about Thailand and Thai people through hanging around in the red light areas of tourist geared cities such as Bangkok, Pattaya and Phuket. Thailand actually has a very conservative and traditional culture. Seeking the approval and blessing from the lady's parents is seen as a necessity by many Thai women when a relationship starts to become serious.

Your Thai girlfriend might have had numerous different foreign boyfriends in the past, but how many of those did she introduce to her parents and close family? If she is eager for you to meet her family this is typically a good sign that she is taking your relationship seriously.

2. She prefers to spend time with you

Is your girlfriend keen to spend time with you? Does she turn down dates with her friends or family in order to spend more quality time with you? If your Thai girlfriend is keen to make time for you then this certainly a good trait to look for, and a sign that she might be taking your relationship seriously.

3. She doesn't ask you for money 

Does your Thai girlfriend love you or does she see you as a walking ATM machine? Well, if she is asking you for money all the time and constantly talking about money, this is usually a sign that the latter option might be true. However; we are seeing a growing number of Thai ladies that are involved with romance scams who never ask their boyfriends for money. These women understand that asking for cash is seen as a red flag by a lot of men… They will tend to build up trust over many months or years before asking for help with money.

4. She talks about her long term plans

Does your girlfriend only talk to you about shopping trips and places to eat out? Is she concerned about the future of your relationship and how you will remain together long term? Or is she more worried about short term activities? If your girlfriend is making long term plans which include you, then this is a sign that she might be committed to you, thinking about your relationship in the long term and harbouring strong feelings for you.

5. She isn't constantly using her phone when you are together

Is your Thai girlfriend more interested in speaking to you or staring into her phone screen? While we all use cell phones on a daily basis, there comes a point where your phone becomes a distraction and limits your interactions with the people around you. If, for example, you are eating at a nice restaurant with your Thai girlfriend and for the duration of your meal she is more concerned with scrolling through Facebook or texting her friends, this might be a sign that she isn't very interested in you.

If your Thai girlfriend ignores her phone and tries to devote all of her attention to you whilst you are together, this is another positive sign that she might harbour strong feelings for you.

6. She is content with what you're able to provide her

Does your girlfriend ask you to buy her things and then become upset when you can't or won't? If your girlfriend throws a child-like tantrum when you refuse to buy things for her, this is definitely a sign that she might be more concerned with what you're able to provide her instead of your feelings and your relationship with her. A loving Thai girlfriend will accept the things that you're able to provide her and remain composed when she doesn't get her own way. 

7. She displays your relationship on Facebook

If a Thai woman's Facebook profile is filled with photos of you together, and her relationship status is set to "In a relationship with [your name]", this is a sign that she is taking your relationship more seriously. However, consider this point with caution as in relationship scams women often have multiple Facebook profiles. It is common for Thai ladies to have 3 or 4+ Facebook profiles, one profile for her friends and one for her family members... This allows her to hide her non-serious relationships with close family and friends. If a lady has two or more boyfriends then she will often have two or more Facebook profiles, typically one for each boyfriend.

8. She wants you to marry her

Marriage is important in Thailand. Often in Thai culture, relationships are not considered to be real relationship until a marriage has taken place. Getting married shows true commitment to one another and announces your relationship to the world. If your Thai girlfriend often talks about marriage, and wants you to get married to her, this is a signal that she considers your relationship to be serious and that she harbours strong feelings for you.

9. She passes a background check

There is no single guide or article that can truly determine whether or not someone is a ‘good girl’, all people are unique and circumstances can vary. However there are certain warning signs and red flags that you can look for in your Thai girlfriend which might give clues that she is not a 'good girl’. We will explore some of those undesirable traits in this article.

1. She works in a bar

If your Thai girlfriend works in a bar (or has done in the past), this is the biggest possible red flag that she is not a good girl. Most of the bar girls that we investigate are found to be cheating on their partners. No matter what she tells you or how you think she’s different to the others, if your girlfriend works in a bar then she is probably cheating on you. Women that have been in this profession for any length of time learn to tell convincing lies and tales which mean that their boyfriends never realize they are still sleeping with other men. They hone their skills and become expert liars… We are experts at exposing these lies and finding the truth for our clients.

2. She smokes cigarettes 

Approximately 2% of females in Thailand smoke cigarettes. Outside of the adult entertainment industry you will likely struggle to find women that smoke. Females smoking cigarettes is generally frowned on in Thai culture outside of the sex industry and is definitely a sign that she might not be a good girl. 

3. She has tattoos

Although with the growing influence of Western culture the attitude towards tattoos in Thailand is gradually shifting, tattoos on women still have an association with the sex industry which is why we have included this as a red flag to look for in your girlfriend. Next time you’re in Thailand, try to find a lady working a ‘normal’ job that has a visible tattoo – you might struggle. Many people use tattoos on Thai women as a signal that the lady has previously been involved in the sex industry. 

4. She has two (or more) Facebook profiles

Why does someone need multiple Facebook profiles? Why does anyone need more than one phone number or more than one phone? We have seen many cases where women involved with romance scams setup multiple Facebook pages. For example, “Pin” has a Facebook page which is filled with photos of herself and her boyfriend from Europe. There are many photos showing the two of them together, she is set to “in a relationship” with this boyfriend. Pin’s other Facebook profile is dedicated to her boyfriend from the USA. Again, there are many photos of the happy couple and she is “in a relationship” with him.

Romance scams often involve multiple Facebook profiles (or other social media accounts). If the couple split up then the lady will delete all photos from the account ready for it to be reused for a different boyfriend. In other cases the lady will have one Facebook page which is dedicated to her close family and friends, another profile will be dedicated to her foreign boyfriend. This allows her to hide the boyfriend from her family whilst satisfying her boyfriend’s need to have the relationship showcased on social media… This is a sign that maybe your girlfriend doesn’t take your relationship very seriously – or perhaps she is involved with so many different men that it’s easier to hide the relationships from her parents and close friends.  

5. She is always talking about money

Wages in Thailand are typically much lower than in the Western world and if you are in a committed relationship with a Thai woman then it only makes sense that you help her out with cash if she is struggling to support herself. However, there is a difference between helping someone out and being taken for a ride. Many people might say that a “good Thai girl” will have a career that allows her to support herself and her family, and while this might be the case, there are certainly a lot of single ladies that are struggling to support themselves and looking for a farang boyfriend to help them out.

If your Thai girlfriend is constantly talking about money or asking for money then ask yourself… Does she only care about your money? As her partner you will be responsible for helping to support her and her close family members (such as her parents and children). If you find that she is constantly talking about money or asking for money then think twice about her motives.

6. She says that all Thai men are bad

If your girlfriend tells you that all Thai men are bad, you should question her reasons behind making that statement. All Thai men are not bad. Many Thai men are loving husbands and fathers, many Thai men hold down respectable careers and treat their partners with love and respect. If your girlfriend says that “all Thai men are bad”, you should wonder why she is saying that. Maybe Thai men just don’t like her!

7. Her English is too good

Public schools in Thailand are not great at teaching English to their students. Most Thai people that you speak with will have learned English using two different methods. Firstly there are university educated Thais that learn to speak English at a good level, if your girlfriend falls into this category then this is generally a good sign (as long as she’s telling the truth and not a “fake university student”!). 

The other group of people will have learned to speak English through working and interacting with foreign people. Young, attractive Thai women might have picked up their conversational abilities in less respectable places. After all, it would be very difficult to learn English through interacting with foreigners if you work in a supermarket or factory. Many Thai women learn to speak English through interacting with customers in the bar scene.

8. She is constantly drinking alcohol 

As in most societies, alcohol consumption in Thailand is acceptable in moderation. The key word here is “moderation”. That means on special occasions, for celebrations, or cracking open a bottle of beer to enjoy with your meal on a Friday night. “Moderation” does not extend to sitting on a bar stool most nights, or dancing in nightclubs and getting sloppy drunk on a regular basis.

Having an unhealthy relationship with alcohol would act as a red flag for anyone in any country of the world, and this is especially true in Thailand. Just as people that live in Las Vegas generally do not sit in casinos every night gambling, most Thai people that live in tourist geared party areas of the country such as Pattaya or Phuket generally don’t find it acceptable to drink themselves into a stupor every evening. 

9. She has no visible means of income

It is surprisingly often that we are contacted by men who tell us that “My girlfriend doesn’t work but she visits the club most nights with her friends”. If this is the case then the writing is on the wall. Your girlfriend is simply a freelancer and meeting men at nightclubs, freelance friendly bars, or similar venues. How else is it possible for someone to survive in a city that has a high cost of living with no visible means of income? 

We see other cases where women are receiving money from a different boyfriend which allows them to live a comfortable life in the city. They don’t work and have no need for money. During their free time they might meet other men (sometimes younger and more attractive than the supporting boyfriend) – and because they’re already receiving support they don’t need to ask for more cash. Many of these ladies realize that asking their boyfriend for money is seen as a red flag… Instead they might try to establish a strong relationship with the man over a number of months or years; eventually he will be able to help out with money as well. The result of this is multiple different boyfriends sending cash on a regular or sporadic basis; this would be regarded as a win by many unscrupulous Thai women. 

“None of these points apply to my girlfriend! She’s a good girl!”

Well… not quite. While there are certain traits that can signal your girlfriend might not be a good girl, these don’t always apply. In fact, professional scammers know exactly the things to say and do in order to win over the trust of their foreign boyfriends. For example, many of these ladies are well aware that asking for money is seen as a red flag by foreign men. As a consequence they will never ask for money. They might take their boyfriend to pray in the temple... They might introduce family members to help gain the man’s trust. We’ve encountered numerous instances where individuals set up websites falsely claiming to operate legitimate businesses from Thailand. They often present themselves as exporters of in-demand products, such as tyres, vehicle parts, electronics, food, textiles, clothing, or other perishable goods. After receiving partial payment for a shipment, these unscrupulous individuals vanish with your money. In some cases, they may even invent additional reasons to request more funds before ultimately disappearing.

In such cases, there is often very little we can do to assist. When a scam artist commits fraud and vanishes, their objective is to make it impossible for anyone to trace them. If they have provided minimal or fabricated information prior to the transaction, which is common, they significantly increase their chances of never being found. The use of 'mule bank accounts' to receive proceeds is also common.

This type of fraud occurs regularly, and in many cases, the fraudsters claim to be based in Thailand, though they may be operating from a different country entirely.

How to Check if a Company in Thailand is Legit for Free

Recent surveys indicate that 56% of the Thai respondents admitted to having affairs while married - this surprising statistic ranks Thailand as one of the most unfaithful nationalities in the world.

As a leading private investigation agency based in Thailand, we decided to compile our own statistics on the subject of infidelity in Thailand. The purpose of gathering this data was to assess how many of our clients discovered that their partner was actively cheating on them whilst we conducted our investigations.

You might find there to be a lack of statistics available on Thai girlfriends or on the subject of infidelity in Thailand involving foreigners and Thai women. Compared with other subjects these topics seem to have a lack of data backed statistics relating to them (this seems to be the case with private investigator statistics across the board). With this in mind we decided to compile our own data based on infidelity related investigations carried out by our agency from the period of January 1st 2019 – January 1st 2020.

These statistics relate to all cases as a whole which involved Thai girlfriends (or wives) that were suspected of cheating on their partners. It’s important to recognize that our statistics only relate to people that felt the need to engage the services of a detective agency to investigate suspicions of infidelity in their partner. Because of this, our information should not be used to form sweeping opinions relating to certain groups of people as a whole.

These statistics relate to cases which involved Thai bar girls (women working in beer bars), also ladies working in a go-go bars and massage parlors. For our data these service industry type occupations were grouped together. This information suggests, unsurprisingly, that infidelity seems to be more likely where one partner works at an Thai adult entertainment venue.

In cases which involve foreign men and Thai ladies, we often discover that the lady works at a nightlife venue while claiming to have a legitimate job. Many of our clients would never have discovered that their partner was working in the sex industry had they not instructed us to start an investigation.
